 Interview with Lara

What is the Peace Drum Project?
It’s a music project that brings students from Leo Baeck (a Jewish School) and Iblin (an Arab school) together to create music between two religions and not war. Both of our schools are learning and practicing individually, and then we get to meet up a few times a year to play together.  I have visited Iblin School and soon they will come visit us here at Leo Baeck.

How did you find out about the Peace Drum Project?
During the summer our principal sent out a letter to us explaining the Peace Drums Project and inviting us to join.

Why did you want to join?
At the same that I received the letter from my principal, Israel and Gaza were fighting. I believe in peace, not war, so joining this project was an important way for me to show this.

How does playing music bring children together?
During our rehearsals we learn to cooperate and be in rhythm and harmony. We learn to work together, help each other out and collaborate in order to create music.

Tell us about your meeting with the kids from Iblin.
The first meeting was very exciting. I made new friends and we added each other on Facebook. Naghan, who plays the same instrument as me and has more experience with the instrument, took me aside and taught me some new things. We are good friends now and I we have even met up on weekends to hang out.

Are there any important life lessons you have learned so far from the Peace Drum Project?
Yes, don’t judge a religion by the people you see on TV and in the news.
